Stucco
A durable and versatile exterior finish made from a mixture of cement, sand, lime, and water. It is applied in multiple layers to create a strong, weather-resistant surface that enhances the aesthetic appeal of buildings. Stucco is known for its ability to provide insulation, fire resistance, and a variety of textures and finishes.

About our Exterior Systems
3-Coat Stucco with Drainage Mat Wall Assembly (from interior to exterior):
1. Sheathing
– Usually exterior-grade gypsum, OSB, or plywood.
2. Weather-Resistive Barrier (WRB)
– Two layers of Grade D building paper or equivalent (some codes allow a combination of WRB and drainage mat if it meets minimum drainage requirements).
3. Drainage Mat
– A rainscreen drainage mat (usually ¼"–⅜" thick) that allows water to escape and air to circulate behind the stucco.
4. Metal Lath (Self-furred)
– Fastened through the drainage mat into framing; ensures proper embedment of the base coat.
5. Scratch Coat (1st Coat)
– Portland cement-based plaster (approx. ⅜" thick), scored horizontally for bonding.
6. Brown Coat (2nd Coat)
– Portland cement-based plaster (approx. ⅜" thick), leveled and floated smooth.
7. Cure Time
– Typically 7–10 days before applying the finish coat, depending on environmental conditions.
8. Finish Coat (3rd Coat)
– Can be cement-based or acrylic; applied at ⅛" thick or as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
Key Notes:
Flashing must be installed at all windows, doors, penetrations, and transitions before applying the WRB.
Weep screeds at the base of walls are critical for drainage.
Control joints should be installed to manage cracking and meet ASTM C1063 guidelines.
Examples of Stucco Finishes:
Smooth Finish – A sleek, modern look often used in contemporary homes and commercial buildings
Fine Sand- A slightly rough texture that provides a natural, earthy appearance.
Medium Sand- a textured exterior coating that provides a balanced grainy appearance—neither too fine nor too coarse.
